Tansey named department chair

John Tansey, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, has been named chair of the university's department of chemistry.

Tansey has been a faculty member at Otterbein since 2002, teaching courses such as general chemistry and advanced biochemistry. Tansey’s research focuses on elucidating the role of lipid droplet proteins in lipid storage and disease. He previously served as director of Otterbein's interdisciplinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program and was recognized with the university's Best New Teacher Award in 2004.

He has been involved with the Programmatic Accreditation Committee, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s accreditation program, since its inception in 2013 and has served as the chair of the accreditation committee since 2020. He has also served on the Education and Professional Development Committee and the Science Outreach and Communication Committee. In addition, he has served as a lead judge for the Undergraduate Poster Competition at ASBMB annual meetings. He is also an ASBMB fellow.
