2025 member dues increase in response to inflation

ASBMB Today Staff
Sept. 16, 2024

After careful deliberation by its Finance Committee and governing Council, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will raise member dues modestly for the first time in five years and for only the second time in the past 20 years.

Member dues for 2025

  • Regular: $175
  • Industry: $175
  • Affiliate: $65
  • Early career: $85
  • Graduate student: $35
  • Student: $20
  • Chapter student: $20

The increase reflects the expansive programming and value provided by the society for members at all career stages and acknowledges the significant impact inflation has on annual costs.  Dues account for only a portion of the revenue that support ASBMB’s many programs and services.

Over the past five years, the Council has worked hard to keep dues flat to support members facing the unique challenges of the pandemic period in both their personal and professional lives. Yet, over that time, the cost of providing ASBMB programming has grown substantially as well.

Although the society is fortunate to have reserves in place to support many activities, those funds are hard at work in a strong financial market, generating a portion of the resources necessary for ASBMB’s many non-revenue producing programs.  ASBMB’s primary sources of program support are membership dues and net proceeds from scientific publishing, which have been reduced due to changes in the publishing environment.

The most recent regular member dues increase was in 2020. Prior to that, dues were flat from 2005 to 2020. Student dues were previously $20 and then were lowered to $10 in 2014.
