Is anyone there? Information transfer in biology from proteins to organisms

Life is built on communication. From the subtle shape-shifting of a single protein to the coordinated behavior of entire organisms, evolution has refined the art of sensing and responding to the world. This minicollection explores how living systems detect chemical and physical signals and how those signals are translated into action. Topics include the molecular choreography of protein allostery, the transmission of information across membranes, the dialogue between organs and organelles, and the collective intelligence of quorum sensing and interspecies communication.

The papers in this collection highlight exciting studies about cell communication. As all ASBMB journals are gold open access, each article in this collection is freely available.

The 2026 ASBMB Annual Meeting, March 7-10, at National Harbor in the Washington D.C. metro area will further explore cell communication. The meeting will feature a special Deep Dive session on cell communication as well as a plenary lecture by Eric Betzig of University of California, Berkeley.
