Science serves us all

The latest proposal to slash funding to key federal agencies threatens the future of American science, resulting in lost cures, treatments and vital economic growth. ASBMB is calling on Congress to reject the proposed devastating cuts and policy changes at U.S. science agencies and reaffirm their support for biomedical research — and you can help.

Your voice as a scientist supplies the real-world perspective that policymakers need to hear. When you share your story, your expertise or your concerns, you help shape decisions that impact science funding. Advocacy isn’t just about big movements — when you engage, you help ensure that science remains a national priority.

Our asks

  • Maintain U.S. competitiveness by supporting the NIH and NSF budgets passed on a bipartisan basis by the Senate Appropriations Committee
    • $48.7 billion for the National Institutes of Health
    • $9 billion for the National Science Foundation
  • Preserve and strengthen funding for basic science research and training for the next generation of scientists
  • Ensure that any changes to NIH’s funding structure for grants is accompanied with a transition plan and appropriate funds
    • The president’s budget request from earlier this year proposes a multi-year funding approach for half of NIH’s research project grants without additional funding
    • Multi-year funding without an increase in budget means fewer grants and lower success rates, reducing NIH’s capacity to fund new, highly meritorious research
