ASBMB supports the MSI STEM Achievement Act

April 12, 2021

The ASBMB endorses the MSI STEM Achievement Act and if passed, this bill directs the National Science Foundation to allocate funds for capacity building at tribal colleges, historically black colleges and other minority-serving institutions (MSIs). MSIs are defined as institutions of higher education established with the express purpose of providing access to higher education for specific minority groups.

MSIs are a valuable resource that can support the current and future STEM workforce. According to a 2019 National Academies report, two and four-year MSIs enroll nearly 30% of all undergraduates enrolled in U.S. higher education. The major recommendations from this report are the foundation of the MSI STEM Achievement Act. This bill is an example of evidence-based policymaking that not only supports the STEM workforce, but also ensures that the environment for scientific research is diverse and inclusive.

"This bill would go a long way toward addressing racial inequities in STEM and the ASBMB strongly urges members of Congress to swiftly pass this bill,” says Benjamin Corb, ASBMB public affairs director, said. “Efforts like this will allow the American research enterprise to continue developing innovative medicines, treatments and technologies for the betterment of the American people."
