Advocacy

Capitol Hill Day

The Public Affairs Advisory Committee advocates on behalf of ASBMB members for evidence-based science policy, sustained investments in investigator-initiated, basic scientific research and workforce policies that enhance the training of the next generation of scientists and that increase diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in the nation’s research enterprise. Every year, our committee members and our Advocacy Training Program cohort comes to Washington D.C. to advocate on behalf of science to ensure that policymakers recognize the importance of science funding and the importance of supporting the science workforce.

Hill Day 2023

Help us amplify our message on Capitol Hill — ask your elected officials for funding increases for fundamental research by participating in our letter-writing campaign or contacting them on social media.

The ASBMB's FY2024 appropriations asks

  • $50.9 billion for the National Institutes of Health's FY2024 budget (not to include ARPA-H)
  • $3.56 billion for the National Institute of General Medical Sciences that support fundamental biomedical discovery as well as the majority of the biomedical research workforce training
  • $12 billion for the National Science Foundation to match Congress' promises in the CHIPS and Science Act, ensuring new initiatives have adequate resources and investments are not redirected away from fundamental science research
  • $8.8 billion for the Department of Energy to match President Biden's FY2024 budget
