Jugando con la Ciencia - Northwestern University

Nicolas Martinez, Northwestern University

Jugando con la Ciencia (JCLC), Spanish for “Playing with Science”, is a science outreach organization run by STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) graduate students at Northwestern University. The purpose of this program is to familiarize young Hispanics with science using hands-on experiments. To achieve this we run a bi weekly after-school program at Washington Elementary School in Evanston (Illinois) as well as other science-themed events open to the general Evanston community. Through our program, we have inspired Spanish-speaking children and adults to learn about science, strengthen critical thinking, as well as imparted trust, respect, confidence and cooperation. Our current efforts as a Northwestern University Organization aim to improve the achievement gap between Latino and non-minority populations by illustrating the critical role science plays in our daily lives.
