George Gilbert 'Gil' Ashwell (1916 – 2014)


George Gilbert “Gil” Ashwell, a National Institutes of Health glycobiologist who won the ASBMB–Merck Award for outstanding contributions to biochemistry and molecular biology in 1984, died in late June in Bethesda, Md. He was 97.

In a recent issue of the journal Cell, a group of scientists from John Hopkins University School of Medicine identified a cause of brain-cell death leading to neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease. Their research findings not only are a significant achievement in Parkinson’s disease research but also may open avenues to explore new drug targets for the devastating disease.
