Ana Barral currently serves as Assistant Professor and Program Director of the Associate in Human Biology Program at National University. National University is a private non-profit comprehensive university California, with a commitment to diversity as evidenced by its high enrollment of Hispanic and African-American students in the state.

Originally from Cuba, Ana obtained her B.S. Biochemistry from the University of Havana, and her Ph.D. in Medical Cell Biology from the University of Linkoping, Sweden. Her research focused on immunological aspects of malignant melanoma. After a postdoctoral training at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology and a few years in the biotech industry, she decided to channel her passion for teaching and focus on STEM education. She is involved in a number of undergraduate course-based research initiatives, such as the Small World Initiative and the Genomics Education Partnership. In 2016 she completed the Biology Scholars Research Residency, and is currently dedicated to implement and fine-tune active learning approaches in science education to a diverse student body. A member of ASBMB since 2012, she has benefited from many of the outreach activities and collaborations through the society, including participating and later being a mentor of the Art of Science Communication course.
