1965 - Jacques L. Monod



Jacques Lucien Monod (1910-1976) was awarded one-third of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries concerning genetic control of enzyme and virus synthesis. Monod, along with fellow Nobel Laureate François Jacob, is famous for his work on the lac operon, a group of key nucleotide sequences – including an operator, a promoter, and one or more genes – required for the transport and metabolism of lactose in gut bacteria. Their study of the control of gene expression in the lac operon provided the first example of a transcriptional regulation system. Monod also suggested the existence of mRNA molecules that use the information encoded in DNA to make proteins. Another important contribution of Monod is his theory of allostery, by which a molecule called an allosteric activator or inhibitor binds to a protein and increases or decreases, respectively, the protein’s attraction to a specific substrate
