Berg Bio

Dr. Berg has directed the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health since November 2003. He left that position in June 2011 to become the associate vice chancellor for health policy and planning at the University of Pittsburgh, as well as assume the role of professor in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Department of Computational and Systems Biology. Berg’s research focuses on the structural and functional roles that metal ions, especially zinc, play in proteins. He has made major contributions to understanding how zinc-containing proteins bind to DNA or RNA and regulate gene activity.
