On July 17, the U.S. House of Representatives provided its blueprint for funding the National Institutes of Health for fiscal 2013. It is not a friendly proposal, unless you don’t mind a flat budget for a third year in a row. Add salary caps, restrictions on some areas of research and cuts to every institute at the NIH, and you have a recipe for a calamitous environment for biomedical research. Unfortunately, the NIH funding bill from the U.S. Senate was not much better.
 

These proposals truly represent an “all hands on deck” moment for our community. ASBMB has issued a challenge to its members to schedule 100 meetings with their senators and representatives while they are in their home offices this summer. Only with YOUR help can we let Congress know the vital importance of federal funding for biomedical research.
