Communication Workshop: Make Your Elevator Pitch

Sponsored by the ASBMB Public Outreach Committee

Saturday April 2, 2016
12:30 - 4:30 PM
San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina, San Diego Ballroom C

Elevator pitch During EB2016, you’ll meet dozens, even hundreds of scientists. This meeting is  the chance for you to tell them all about your research: why it is important and  what impact it will have. But what do you say to these people without going  through every blot you’ve run or gene you’ve sequenced? How do you give a  concise, digestible summary of your project before they run off to the next talk or  poster?

In this intense, hands-on workshop, you will get the chance to work with members  of the ASBMB Public Outreach Committee to construct an elevator pitch, a brief,  engaging description of your research that can be used in these types of  situations. Our source for this workshop will be “The Art of Science  Communication,” our new online course that provides fundamental instruction on  communicating science to different audiences.

During the workshop, we’ll go through the background of science communication before jumping into tips and real-life examples of approaches to communication that work (and don’t work). We will then break out into groups to give you a chance to work directly with one of our expert mentors.

As an added bonus, a number of previous participants in “The Art of Science Communication” course will be on hand to show off what they have learned, and will help walk you through the workshop activities.

Participants in this workshop will have priority for signing up for the next online round of “The Art of Science Communication,” which will take place in summer 2016.
