A MESSAGE FROM the director
As the new school year begins I want to update the Lipid Research Division Members on new developments within the Division.
Our website has undergone some cosmetic surgery and we believe it’s been improved. Check it out if you haven’t visited the site recently. (http://www.asbmb.org/lipidcorner/). We’ve also posted the current committees and committee members. Also, don’t forget about our Job Board. Both those with open positions and those looking for jobs can use this to find candidates and jobs respectively.
One of the committees is the Advocacy Committee, which is Chaired by Yusuf Hannun. This is a key committee of the LRD that will be responsible for communicating with various funding agencies to promote all aspects of lipid research. If any LRD members have comments, please send them to me or post them on the website.
Don’t forget that nominations for the “Avanti Young Investigator Award of the ASBMB Lipid Research Division” are due by September 15th. A description of the award and nomination process can be found on our website. If you know of a good candidate but need a little more time to get the materials submitted just let me know and we’ll try to find a solution to ensure good candidates are nominated in a timely manner.
One of the things we’d like to post on our website is news worthy items about our members. We are currently in the process of listing this year’s awardees of the JLR awards. Please let me know if you know of any member that has received other awards, accepted new positions (Chairperson, Director, etc) or recently retired.
Finally, I’d like to strongly encourage folks to support the lipid community by attending and sending lab members to the 2010 ASBMB meeting in Anaheim. This is the first Lipid Theme organized by the Lipid Research Division. Visit the website to view the lipid sessions . Don’t forget, there are graduate student and postdoctoral fellow travel awards available. Our members will continue to organize this Theme at the annual ASBMB meetings so community support is important. Why not make plans to attend and bring your students and post-docs if possible! It will be a great opportunity to get our group together at the scientific sessions, the workshop and the receptions planned for Anaheim.
