Melissa Caras

CarasWhat are you doing now?
I’m about to start my fourth year of graduate school in the neurobiology and behavior program at the University of Washington.

What is your impression of your Hill Day experience one year later?
My overall impression of the Hill Day experience has not changed over the course of the year.

What has your participation in Hill Day inspired you to do in terms of advocacy?
The Hill Day experience confirmed that my future does not lie with advocacy or politics. That being said, I am still a staunch believer in scientific outreach. Educating the public about advances in basic research and technology indirectly will help the entire scientific community.

What would your advice be to future participants?
Try to keep an open mind. Although I did not walk away from the experience wanting to participate in advocacy efforts, many of my fellow participants did!
