Shannon Colton is a Program Director at the Center for BioMolecular Modeling at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The CBM serves as a bridge between the research laboratory and the classroom using hands-on activities and 3D physical models. Through funding from the NIH (NIH-SEPA and NIH-NIDA), we have developed materials and professional development opportunities for high school educators to engage their students in a hands-on exploration of the molecular world. Shannon directs the SMART (Students Modeling A Research Topic) Team program, where teams of students work closely with a researcher to explore a molecular story, develop a 3D physical model and communicate their projects through posters and oral presentations. She also developed the Protein Modeling Event for the national Science Olympiad, in which students are challenged to model a protein using foam-covered wire and to explore the molecular story of the protein. Shannon received her BS in biology from Marquette University and her PhD in developmental and molecular biology from Marquette University.
