01/26/10 -- The American Council on Education and the College Board have produced a new paper on major developments and trends in the area of access and diversity in higher education. "A 21st-Century Imperative: Promoting Access and Diversity in Higher Education," discusses the connection between diversity and positive educational outcomes, the issue of merit, and the expanded definition of diversity. Matchmaker for Science

12/29/09 -- National Lab Day (NLD), dubbed by its founder Jack Hidary as the "eHarmony of Science", provides an online platform for scientists and science teachers across the country to connect, learn and contribute to K-12 science education. According to NLD developers, "National Lab Day is more than just a day. It's a nationwide initiative to build local communities of support (hubs) that will foster ongoing collaborations among volunteers, students and educators". Science teachers use NLD to submit requests for science projects in their classrooms. NLD matches their requests to volunteers based on areas of expertise and interests. Volunteers can be university students, scientists, engineers and community members interested in STEM education. Visit the National Lab Day website for more information. Administration Seeking Input Concerning Access to Publicly Funded Research

12/11/09 -- The Whitehouse Office of Science and Technology Policy has established an online Forum to solicit public input on policies concerning access to publicly funded research results, such as those that appear in academic and scholarly journal articles. The Forum will run through Jan. 7, 2010. Go to Forum.
Enhancing Neuroscience Diversity through Undergraduate Research
12/10/09 -- A NIH Blueprint Program for Enhancing Neuroscience Diversity through Undergraduate Research Education Experiences is a grant opportunity aimed at encouraging and preparing undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds to enter Ph.D. degree programs in the neurosciences. The EPD Missions include:
- Promoting Undergraduate Biochemistry and Molecular Biology involvement through the Undergraduate Affiliate Network
- Creation of ASBMB approved Graduate and Undergraduate education standards and curriculum
- Dissemination of professional, postdoctoral, graduate and undergraduate resources and training
- Hosting Graduate and Undergraduate poster competitions
- Involvement in promoting professional career education and development
- Providing resources and direction for K-12 Education and public Outreach
- Hosting the ASBMB Honor Society
In 2008 ASBMB published a report titled ""Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and Liberal Education: A Report to the Teagle Foundation" in which they examined undergraduate programs in biochemistry and molecular biology (BMB) and attempted to evaluate the success of their graduates.
