2014 HOPES Grant Recipients

We are pleased to announce this year’s Hands-on Opportunities to Promote Engagement in Science seed grant recipients:

  1. Our water our lives: an investigation of water ecology – a collaboration between Dr. Christine Bezotte from Elmira College and Jason Howe from Cohn Middle School in Elmira, N.Y.
  2. The SciCats program: Learning biochemical and biological sciences at the elementary school level – a collaboration between Dr. Sylvie Garneau-Tsodikova at the University of Kentucky and Kristi Webb at Ashland Elementary School in Lexington, Ky. 
  3. Science enthusiasm is contagious: secondary to primary student transfer – a collaboration between Dr. Celeste R. Wirsig-Wiechmann from the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center and Bessie Bryant from Metro Career Academy in Oklahoma City, Okla. 
  4. SciTrek for the 7th grade: engaging students in the practices of science – a collaboration between Dr Norbert Reich at the University of California Santa Barbara and Mega Cotich and Shannon Carpenter  at La Colina Junior High School in Santa Barbara, Calif.
  5. Student inquiry with RNAi-mediated gene silencing in a highs school setting – a collaboration between Dr. Greg Hermann at Lewis and Clark College and Amy Lindahl at Grant High School in Portland, Ore. 

For the past 4 years, the ASBMB has awarded small seed grants to support innovative, hands-on projects  that engaged K-12 students in science learning through the HOPES program.  These awards have been made possible by a grant from the NSF.  For more information about the grant opportunity, visit http://www.asbmb.org/hopesgrant/
