ASBMB 2013 Graduate Minority Travel Award

The ASBMB Graduate Minority Travel Award is funded through a grant to the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) by the NIGMS/NIH MARC Program, (FASEB MARC Program: T36-GM08059-29), to support a portion of the expenses of minority graduate student first authors presenting research at the ASBMB Annual Meeting, held in conjunction with Experimental Biology 2013, in Boston, MA. 

Successful applicants will be reimbursed for their qualifying meeting related travel expenses following their participation in the meeting and related events noted below, up to a maximum of $1,650.00 US.  Reimbursement policies for this award category only are administered by the FASEB MARC Office.  Specific policies will be communicated directly to award recipients from the FASEB MARC Office.

Eligibility Requirements  

Students already funded by the MARC Program are not eligible for this award. 

Applicant must be a current member of ASBMB at the time of travel award application submission and have paid his/her membership dues for the billing cycle which includes the 2013 Annual Meeting (Jan-Dec, 2013) prior to application submission.  Member status is verified and tagged to the application at login to the travel award application site.   

Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents qualify for this award.  All ASBMB Graduate Minority travel award applicants/recipients must be USA Citizens or Permanent Residents ('green card') of the USA, and must reside within the USA or USA territories.  Effective July 14, 2011, proof of USA Citizenship or USA Permanent Residency is required. 

Applicant must be a member of a minority group currently under-represented in science.  You will be asked to select from the following NIH provided list. 

Black/African American
Hispanic American
Latino American
Chicano American
American Indian/Native American (see tribal affiliation certificate below)
Pacific Islander (Hawai'i)
Pacific Islander (Guam)
Pacific Islander (American Samoa)
 

Applicant must successfully submit an abstract as first author to an ASBMB topic category #2000-2397, by the November 13 abstract submission deadline.  Abstracts submitted to other societies’ abstract topics and late-breaking abstracts do not qualify for ASBMB awards. 

Required Event Participation  

  • Friday, April 19, 2013, Travel Award Plenary Lecture and Poster Presentations 
  • Saturday, April 20, 2013, Trainee Professional Development Program 
  • Sunday, April 21, 2013, Welcome Reception and Poster Presentations, sponsored by the ASBMB Minority Affairs Committee 
  • Presentation of abstract during the main EB Meeting, date of presentation will be communicated from EB2013@mirasmart.com in February. 

An obligation of award acceptance is full participation by each award recipient in the above ASBMB sponsored pre-meeting and meeting events.   

Details will be provided to all award recipients with their award notifications.

  •  Research Statement, 500 words describing the focus of your research, inspiration or motivation for studying science and future career goals  
  • Abstract, copy of your successfully submitted abstract as first author to an ASBMB topic category #2000-2397 
  • CV, copy of the applicant's CV  
  • Proof of Citizenship  

Status (U.S. Citizen) Must provide a legible photocopy of one of the following.from the Approved NIH document list.  

Identification page of your valid USA Passport
Birth Certificate
Certificate of Naturalization
Certificate of United States Citizenship or
Consular Registration of Birth Abroad Form
 

Proof of Citizenship  (Permanent Resident)
If you are a “Permanent Resident of the USA,” you will be required to provide a legible copy of your “Green Card” 
 

  • Tribal Affiliation Certificate
    If 'American Indian/Native American' is selected, you will be required to specify your tribe and provide a copy of your tribal affiliation certificate with your supporting documentation.
