Undergraduate Student Competitive Travel Award Description

This $400 award is offered to assist undergraduate students presenting an abstract at the ASBMB Annual Meeting and award recipients are expected to compete in the15th Annual Undergraduate Student Research Poster Competition in Washington, DC.  There are a limited number of travel awards in this category and they will be awarded competitively.

U.S. residency is not required for this award. 

December, 2010 graduates not already enrolled in a Graduate Program and Spring, 2011 college graduates are eligible to apply.

Participation in the Undergraduate Student Research Poster Competition on Saturday, April 9, 2011, is mandatory for ALL Travel Award recipients.  However, you do not have to be a travel award recipient to participate in the competition.   Travel schedules should be considered to allow for an on time arrival at the Poster Competition on Saturday, April 9, 2011. View the Poster Competition webpage for a full schedule of events.

New this year!
Invitations to participate in the Poster Competition will be emailed to all First Author undergraduates in January 2011.  You cannot sign up for the competition until you receive your invitiation.  Invitations will be emailed to the address provided when you set up your log in at the Experimental Biology abstract submission site.

Undergraduate Affiliate Network (UAN) Travel Award Designates and Regional Meeting Travel Award Recipients

DO NOT submit an Undergraduate Competitive Travel Award application if you have been selected by your UAN Chapter advisor as the designated UAN Travel Award recipient for your chapter (this is a noncompetitive travel award) or if you have been awarded a travel award as a result of a poster competition during a Regional Meeting.  Go to the Undergraduate Affiliate Network Travel Award page for additional information and instructions.

Required Supporting Documents

Travel Award applications are accepted online only.  The following supporting documents are for Undergraduate Student COMPETITIVE Travel Award applicants.
Supporting documents must be uploaded as either .pdf or .jpg files.  All other file types must be converted to .pdf or .jpg.
  • Research Essay
    The essay must include the following information, 1) a general description of your research including the long term goal of your project; 2) your involvement with your research; how long you’ve been working on your project and what your role is in the project; 3) why you like to do research and 4) your post-graduate plans.
  • Letter of Recommendation
    Letter from your faculty advisor on institution letterhead which explains why it would be beneficial for you to attend this meeting. A letter with an electronic signature or a scanned version of the letter is acceptable.
  • Copy of ‘Successfully Submitted’ Abstract
