ASBMB Undergraduate Affiliate Network (UAN) and
Regional Meeting Travel Awards
Designates who have successfully submitted their abstracts to an ASBMB Topic Category by the November 9th deadline must complete the online designated form by February 5, 2010. This is for designated UAN and Regional Meeting Travel Award Recipients only. All other travel award categories are no longer accepting applications.
UAN Travel Award Designates:
Each affiliated program with a minimum of five student members will be awarded one $400.00 travel grant to send an ASBMB undergraduate member to the ASBMB Annual Meeting to present their research in the Annual ASBMB Undergraduate Poster Competition and during the main EB Meeting.
The number of awards available for a chapter is based on the number of members in your chapter. Each chapter advisor designates one award recipient when a chapter has 5-19 members, 2 designated award recipients when a chapter has 20 members and a maximum of 3 designated award recipients when a chapter has thirty or more members.
5-19 student members = 1 non-competitive travel award
20 or more student members = 2 non-competitive travel awards
This award is not competitive and the chapter advisor(s) selects the student(s) designated to receive the award(s).

Regional Meeting Travel Awards:
ASBMB provides funding for each UAN region to hold small scientific meetings aimed at bringing students and faculty together and highlighting research projects. Students presenting at a regional meeting compete for a number of $400 travel awards to present their research at the following year's ASBMB Annual Meeting and Poster Competition.
UAN Regional Directors and UAN Chapter Advisors will be contacted directly with instructions and a link for submitting their travel award designates in either of these categories. DO NOT submit any UAN Designate or Regional Meeting Travel Awardee information through the Competitive application site.
Student members of a UAN chapter NOT designated to receive a non-competitive UAN Travel Award may apply for one of the ASBMB Undergraduate Student COMPETITIVE Travel Awards. This is a separate application process. Click here to refer to the guidelines and online application.
Part I: Guidelines
DEADLINE EXTENSION: Monday, November 9, 2009, 5:00 PM, Eastern, for Abstract Submissions
All recipients of a UAN or Regional Meeting Travel Award, must submit an abstract to the ASBMB Annual Meeting by the
Wednesday, November 4, 2009 abstract submission deadline.
All designated recipients must “Successfully Submit” an abstract to an ASBMB Topic Category and pay the $65 nonrefundable abstract submission fee, by the November 4, 2009 abstract submission deadline in order to complete the UAN/Regional Meeting Travel Award Form.
Abstracts submitted to other societies’ topic categories do not qualify and will be declined for an award. You may return to the abstract submission site by November 4, 2009, and log in as a returning user to update your topic category selection if necessary.
Only abstracts with a status of “successfully submitted,” can be submitted as part of an application. Abstracts with 'pending' or 'incomplete' status do not qualify and will be declined for an award. A successfully submitted abstract means the $65 abstract submission fee has been paid.
The $65 nonrefundable abstract submission fee is required and cannot be waived by the ASBMB Office. This fee is NOT your meeting registration which is a separate fee.
Applicant must be the first and presenting author of the abstract. There are NO co-first authors.
Late-breaking abstracts cannot be accepted as part of a travel award application form.
Abstracts must be entered into the Undergraduate Poster Competition during the online submission process. Select the "YES" Poster Competition check box which appears on the Society Awards information page, following your selection of a topic category. If you have not entered your abstract in the Poster Competition visit the Poster Competition webpage for instructions on updating your selection.
Part II: Specific to this Award
UAN Travel Award Designates and Regional Travel Awardees must complete an online form to process their awards. All UAN Regional Directors and UAN Chapter Advisors will be contacted directly with instructions and a link to the form.
Part III: Notification/Communication
ALL communication regarding the UAN and Regional Meeting Travel Awards will be via the email address provided on the travel award form.
Please set your internet spam filter to accept email messages from the asbmb.org and mirasmart.com domains.
Designates will be contacted via email no later than January, 31, 2010 with details of travel reimbursement processing and Poster Competition information.
Part IV: Reimbursement and Registration
Meeting registration for undergraduate students is FREE and available on-site at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Travel schedules should be considered to allow for an on time arrival at the Poster Competition on Saturday, April 24, 2010. The competition begins promptly at 1:00 PM.
UAN and Regional Meeting Travel Awardees may claim up to a maximum of $400 in qualifying reimbursable travel expenses to defray meeting related travel costs.
Qualifying expenses include: housing, travel and meals. Original receipts must accompany all reimbursement requests. Faxed or scanned documentation cannot be accepted.
The $65 nonrefundable abstract submission fee does not qualify for reimbursement.
Reimbursement is distributed by the ASBMB Office in Bethesda, MD, following recipients’ participation in the meeting and poster competition. No travel award funds are distributed prior to the conclusion of the meeting and no funds are distributed on-site in Anaheim. Reimbursement takes approximately 4-6 weeks to process following receipt of documentation. Faxed or scanned documentation cannot be accepted.
Specific reimbursement instructions will be provided to all award recipients with their award confirmation in January.
