Biochemistry and molecular biology investigators, educators, and graduate/undergraduate students are in a key position to demonstrate enthusiasm for and provide expertise in the molecular life sciences to K-12 students and teachers. By enhancing K-12 science education we not only help attract the next generation of scientists but also help raise science literacy and interest in students who go on to other careers. Both aspects are important for shaping the science of the future and what role it will play in society. Science outreach additionally benefits its practitioners. Undergraduate and graduate students gain valuable experience in teaching and communicating the importance of the molecular life sciences. Finally, the very act of teaching promotes a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and therefore science outreach can be a valuable tool for college and university educators.
