ΧΩΛ: The ASBMB Undergraduate Honor Society

Mission Statement

The ASBMB Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Honor Society (ΧΩΛ) recognizes exceptional undergraduate juniors and seniors pursuing a degree in the molecular life sciences at a College or University that is a member of the Undergraduate Affiliate Network.  Students are recognized for their scholarly attainment, research accomplishments and outreach activities in the molecular life sciences. 

Who May be Nominated

Undergraduate nominees must be members of the ASBMB Undergraduate Affiliate Network of Junior or Senior standing with a minimum GPA of 3.4, who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in academics, undergraduate research, and science outreach. 

Honor Society Member Benefits

In addition to the regular UAN membership benefits, upon election to the Honor Society, new members receive a a certificate of membership, an official Honor Society lapel pin, and access to the mentoring activities of the Honor Society. 

Chapter benefits include being able to request a Honor Society Speaker, free access to the undergraduate program consulting services of ASBMB, and support from ASBMB and the UAN in hosting approved regional UAN - ΧΩΛ Scientific Meetings.

Nomination Process

Only UAN members may be nominated for election into the Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Honor Society (ΧΩΛ).  For the 2014-15 school year, all nomination materials must be submitted through our online nominations page by January 31, 2015.  Nomination materials may be submitted by either a faculty member of the ASBMB or by the UAN student member.  Honor Society nomination opens on November 15th of each year.  Nominees will be reviewed by the Undergraduate Affiliate Network Committee and students will be notified in early April. 

Nomination Materials

  1. A cover page containing the student's full name, current mailing address, school, email address, and whether or not he/she will be attending the upcoming ASBMB Annual Meeting.   
  2. A copy of official/unofficial transcript indicating science courses taken and GPA. 
  3. A personal statement describing research activities, science outreach activities, and future career goals.  Include information such as presentations made at scientific meetings, publications, and awards and honors received. (1 page limit)
  4. Two letters of support.  These letters should address the student's research, outreach activities and his/her academic achievements.

Election into the Honor Society

Upon election into ΧΩΛ, the student should be prepared to submit a high resolution photo for publication in Enzymatic and the ASBMB website.  The student will also be recognized during the ASBMB Exemplary Contributions to Education Award Lecture at the 2015 ASBMB Annual Meeting in Boston, MA.  Those unable to attend the 2015 annual meeting will be sent the official certificate and ΧΩΛ lapel pin via mail.
