2010 NC Regional MeetingDecember 13, 2010 -- Viterbo University (La Crosse, WI) recently held its 8th Annual Seven River’s Undergraduate Research Symposium on November 12, 2010. The meeting was organized by Ward Jones (Biology) and Scott Gabriel (Chemistry) and in part supported by an ASBMB-UAN Regional Meeting Award. The symposium kicked off with a keynote address by Lee Alan Dugatkin (Biology, University of Louisville) titled “Mr. Jefferson and the Giant Moose”. The keynote address was followed by two student poster sessions and a number of oral presentations.  Approximately 180 students representing 11 area colleges and universities presented on a range of topics such as snails, tick-borne pathogens, and racerunners.  An award ceremony culminated the event, where two ASBMB-UAN Travel Awards were presented by Todd Weaver (ASBMB-UAN NC Director).  Lukas Wallerich from St. Mary's University in Winona, Minn, won a travel award for his oral presentation titled “Tick-borne Pathogens in Winona County: Borrelia burdgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Ixodes scapularis”.  Kelly Theede from Winona State University won the second travel award for her poster presentation, “Characterization of a Genetic Interaction Between SBP1 and WHI3 In Saccharyomyces cerevisiae”.
