Biotech jobs in San Diego

In case you haven’t heard, the ASBMB Annual Meeting, held in conjunction with Experimental Biology, is returning to San Diego in 2020. Be sure to check out the meeting website for an overview of the scientific programming being offered and to sign up for updates.

New this year is the option to fast-track your abstract, in case you need to plan ahead for international visas or other logistical considerations. Abstracts submitted by Oct. 15 are guaranteed a decision within two weeks. The abstract-submission system opens in September. Abstract categories were published in the latest ASBMB Today issue, along with links to some helpful articles on writing an abstract.

San Diego also is the place to be if you’re interested in an R&D career in industry. As science writer Laurel Oldach points out in a recent AToday article on academic entrepreneurs and startups, location is key for startups to have access to plenty of lab space and talent. Lectenz Bio, one of the startups featured in the article, chose to expand to the San Diego area for that reason.

In fact, BioSpace, a life-sciences industry news and careers site, has dubbed the San Diego/southern California area as “Biotech Beach.” You can read the latest news for this biotech hotspot on their website. Additionally, the San Diego Biotechnology Network maintains a directory of life-science and biotechnology companies, which can help you find potential employers in the area.

While you’re at the annual meeting, you may want to look into attending any nearby networking events that may be scheduled through local biotech associations and tech councils. A listing of local groups can be found in the main sidebar of the SDBN website. Networking is essential to learn more about careers in industry and how to make the successful transition.

This week, we bring you a roundup of industry R&D scientist positions at medical biotechnology and biopharmaceutical companies in the San Diego area. These jobs were found from a search of the BioSpace job board for this specific location.

More info about industry careers and salary data by metro areas can be found in the ASBMB Today careers issue.
