Biosymposia Meeting- Hypoxia, Ischemia, and Inflammation: Essential Connections
Boston, Massachusetts

Course Description: "Hypoxia, Ischemia, and Inflammation: Essential Connections"

The aim of this symposium is to show that factors which increase tissue damage during disease such as hypoxia and ischemia, are also critical determinants of inflammatory progression. Much recent work has shown that ischemic tissue damage both induces and accelerates inflammation and that this in turn can act to aggravate many different pathological states. This meeting introduces important recent findings demonstrating these interrelationships, and allows for discussion of corollary effects, including: Hypoxia and ischemia during infection; Host-pathogen influence on microenvironment; Auto-immune/inflammatory diseases and hypoxia/vascular disruption/ischemia; Stroke, hypoxia/ischemia, and inflammation; Myocardial infarction and the inflammatory response; and Hypoxia-induced inflammation in tumorigenesis.

These topics will allow the leaders in the field to present the latest connections between inflammation and the hypoxic micro-environment during disease progression and resolution. The potential for drug development focused on the microenvironment during inflammation will also be addressed.

This program is designed to facilitate full engagement by young investigators and offers ample opportunities for discussion and networking. The BioSymposia Junior Investigator Awards will be given to the lead authors of the best papers in the poster session adjudicated by an expert panel. In addition, award winners will present their work in brief oral presentations during the general session.

OBJECTIVES
· Understand the signaling pathways regulating cellular responses to hypoxia and how they integrate with inflammatory pathways
· Appreciate the multiple inflammatory and ischemic pathologies that may be influenced by oxygen sensing pathways
· Develop novel therapeutic strategies based on an integrated understanding of the basic mechanisms of disease
· Participate in a forum that uniquely integrates science developed across different basic and clinical disciplines

TARGET AUDIENCE
This meeting will address the educational needs of immunologists, oncologists, tumor biologists, vascular biologists, and translational scientists interested in anti-angiogenesis and hypoxia research. We particularly encourage junior faculty, and post-doctoral scientists to attend by offering reduced registration fees, travel awards, and oral presentation opportunities.

Call for abstracts by October 17, 2008
Submit an abstract for poster presentation and receive a $50 refund on the registration fee!
The Biosymposia Junior Investigator Awards will be granted for the best abstracts submitted.
